[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Mavis Gary
SERIES: Young Adult
CHRONOLOGY: Post-movie
CLASS: She doesn't give a shit either way

BACKGROUND:
Once upon a time, Mavis Gary had it all. The hot bod, the greatest guy, and her whole life ahead of her. She fell in love with Buddy, her high school sweetheart, and even stayed with him a few years after high school. Then she had a miscarriage. After that, she dropped contact with her old life. Buddy and her were history, she moved to Minneapolis, and never looked back. Eventually, she became a ghost-writer for the incredibly popular book series, Waverly Prep. But she wasn't happy. She found herself single, angry, and an alcoholic in her thirties; typical for a writer, right?

Her life was fairly boring. The occasional first date, the leaving before the date woke up, the avoiding of calls for the next few weeks. Nothing really appeals to her in life other than alcohol and going out. She never really grew up after she had her miscarriage, still clinging to her 'party days' in an attempt to find better days. This cycle continued for years as she advanced in her writing career.

Then she got an email that Buddy, the love of her life, was having a baby naming ceremony and she was invited. So, of course, she prints out the invite and obsesses over it until she decides to just go back home and make Buddy realize that they are meant to be with each other. Obviously, that doesn't go too well. She meets up with a guy who used to be in love with her, reconnects with her parents, and finds that she's pretty famous in the little hick town. Throughout the course of a week, Mavis manages to make a complete and utter fool out of herself - both sober and drunk - which finally culminates at the end with her freaking out at the ceremony and everyone feeling sorry for her. She hates that, fucks Matt, then ditches town with the idea of actually doing something with her life in her head and her dog, Dulce, in its carrier bag.

PERSONALITY:
She's a real fucking bitch. She is incredibly narcissistic and believes that she can get any guy she wants-- including a married man. Who has no interest in her. At all. But does she care? Hell no. She thinks a little (okay, a lot of) make up, a revealing dress, and good legs is all she needs to get a man. In Minneapolis that's not incorrect; however, it doesn't work here, but she doesn't stop. She's determined to get back with Buddy and break up his family because he belongs with her and only her. Like Matt says, she's still living in the high school days, and writing about high school in her Waverly Prep series with the hot protagonist who always gets what she wants isn't exactly helping matters, either.

She is catty, hits below the belt, and has a lot of issues. A lot of issues. One of which is she is delusional that her life will somehow become better if she gets back with her high school boyfriend. She believes that if she just gets Buddy back, her life won't be as awful. The root of all of this, really, is the miscarriage she had with Buddy's child, but her life had spiraled downward since then. Going off to New York in search of a dream she didn't know yet, marrying a man she can't stand, writing books about high school; all of that left her empty and hollow inside. In addition to her depression, she has alcoholism as well-- or, at least she thinks she does, but it's fairly obvious that she has some problems with alcohol. She drinks a lot regularly, especially so back home, and most likely has spent every moment in her little fish shit town at least a little drunk.

Everything about Mavis Gary is destructive. She goes back home to break up a happy couple, believing that she really does belong with Buddy. Her grand plan is to seduce him, bring him back to New York, and ... she hasn't thought past that. Seeing the image of his baby girl -- the child that could have been theirs -- reinvigorated her love for him and that's when the plan forms. Her irrational, disgusting, vile plan. People try to help -- her parents, Matt, Buddy's wife and her friends -- but she shuts them down. There's nothing wrong with the way she lives her life, she thinks, but as she stays in her hometown, she begins to realize that she really does have issues. Before, she never thought about it much, but she reveals to an old classmate over coffee that she has a lot of issues being happy and how she can't be successful or feel fulfilled, while with other people it seems so ... easy.

There is nothing friendly or kind about her. She can fake it, she can pretend, she can act like it, but she's angry inside. Really angry. Angry, and sad, and a little bit drunk. That isn't to say she can't make friends, but it takes a lot of effort on the other person's side. Dealing with Mavis is like dealing with a child; she's stubborn, immature, and pouts when she doesn't get her way. Granted, her way of pouting is more like drinking diet coke/alcohol until she passes out, but still. However, if somebody manages to pierce through her wall of alcoholism and bitchiness, they'll find ... exactly what they think they'll find. A broken woman who just wants to have a good, happy existence but her self-destructive ways won't allow her to.

After her explosion at Buddy's child-naming ceremony, Mavis realizes that she needs to change her life. However, she has no idea where to start. (Which will be what she will explore here!) She knows that her life needs to change, her lifestyle can't stay the same, and that she needs to grow the fuck up. She is the definition of an irresponsible adult -- textbook case, really -- and she knows that needs to change. Hence, the last line of her book: She took one last look at her small town and blew it a kiss, thinking "Life, here I come."

POWER:
She has the Midas Touch. Everything she touches turns to gold. It'll have to be a conscious thing on her part, though, like she'll have to envision the object turning into gold and think something along the lines of I want gold.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: video |

When I told myself I was going to start over, I didn't mean it like this. Jesus fucking Christ. [ It's already been a long ass day. Week. Life. She has her shit together now-- room, jacket, the necessities. All she's missing is Dulce, but apparently he didn't join her for the ride. She'll miss the little guy. She rubs at her eyes, inhaling slowly and carefully. She's close to breaking down again, but two times in the span of 24 hours is a bit much, even for her. ]

Look, this place has alcohol and bars. To whoever the fuck there is out there listening to this, let's get fucking wasted. I'd buy but I'm assuming my credit cards don't work here.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
Mavis sipped on her daiquiri. She had not lasted more than a few days in the AA program in the City. Sleeping with her sponsor had nothing to do with that. Really. She pulled at her hair at the nape of her neck, watching curiously at the newest freakshow parade from underneath shades. Green scales, blue wings...Jesus, Matt would have a total nerd out if he were here.

"Your check, ma'am." Mavis grimaced at the total. It was a habit, still. She had pretty much unlimited funds thanks to her proficiency of "finding" gold. She slipped her golden credit card into the leather booklet and slid it back towards the bartender.

She hated this place. The prices sucked, there were no decent men, and everyone was sucked into fighting things they didn't want to fight. She had gotten a book series deal by some stroke of luck, and the first publication had gotten mediocre reviews. People didn't know good Young Adult fiction when they read it. Or maybe it was because she wasn't native. All in all, she wasn't fond of this new America.

She hobbled off the bar stool. Lustful eyes followed her out the door, and one pair followed her to the sidewalk. She felt the heat in her back. News reports of a serial killer who burned his victims flashed in her mind.

"Shi-" She turned around, not sure of what to do. Her pulse quickened as she met the glowing red eyes in front of her. The burning sensation overwhelmed her. She cursed and screamed loudly in her mind. Dolce Jr.'s cute little pudgy face flashed in her mind; she felt regret rather than love or distaste. She had sobered up immediately with the pain. Buddy, Matt, her parents... Her old life flashed in front of her eyes. Dolce Jr... She cared more about her dog here than any other person she had met in this city. More than any of the men she'd fucked. It was fitting, considering her distrust for people. Especially the helpful sort.

She could probably really use one of them right now. Or a few hundred.

"Go back to where you came from." The malicious voice was above her as she felt her body melt. It was an uncomfortable feeling. The pain rendered her speechless. Red, orange, black, white... She was going to be a vengeful ghost.

FINAL NOTES:
She hits it and quits it.
